If the villi become damaged due to illness or an imbalance in intestinal flora, they cannot do the job effectively. Beneficial bacteria in your gut keep yeast colonies from interfering with the function of the villi. At least, that’s what the beneficial bacteria can do if they are there.
The ultimate result of an unhealthy digestive system is poor nutrient absorption. Medications meant to relieve heartburn and acid reflux also interfere with nutrient absorption.
Stomach acid is designed to break apart foods. The regular use of acid reducers results in foods, especially proteins, not being fully broken apart. If the foods are not broken down sufficiently, the nutrients are too large to pass through the intestinal walls and into the bloodstream.

Soluble fiber turns into a gel-like substance in your gut. The gel softens stools making it easier to “go” and performs a number of other functions.
One thing that it does is help to lower your cholesterol. The gel absorbs dietary cholesterol and the cholesterol made by your body preventing them from being absorbed into your bloodstream.
Soluble fiber also contributes to the growth of beneficial bacteria, which makes it a prebiotic, not a probiotic. Probiotics contain active bacteria that might or might not decide to take up residence in your gut. The bacteria need prebiotics to grow. Some prebiotics are more effective for this purpose than others.
Digestive enzymes help to break down proteins. Improperly digested proteins become rancid in your colon especially if you are constipated. When foods become rancid, they release free radicals, which are a cause of cellular aging throughout your body and can turn healthy cells into cancer cells.
